A Weekend on the Water: Georgetown Waterfront and the C&O Canal
One of the quiet advantages of living in Georgetown is how fast you can get outside. The Potomac, the C&O Canal and Rock Creek are all within a short walk or ride of The Ledger on 29th. Here is an easy weekend that uses all three.
Saturday morning: the canal towpath
The C&O Canal runs through Georgetown, and its towpath is a flat, car-free route for walking, running and cycling. It is one of the most popular ways to start a weekend. Go early for quiet and shade.
Saturday afternoon: Georgetown Waterfront Park
The park runs along the Potomac and has wide walking paths, open lawn and views across the river. It is a good place to read, meet friends or watch the boats. Bring a blanket in warm weather.
Sunday morning: on the water
Boat and kayak rentals operate near the river in season. Check hours and conditions before you go, since schedules change with the weather.
Sunday afternoon: Rock Creek and the gardens
Rock Creek Park gives you trails and wooded paths a short distance from the neighborhood. Dumbarton Oaks Gardens, nearby, is a quieter option if you prefer a slower walk. Check the current visiting rules and hours before you plan around it.
Why location matters when you rent
If you want outdoor space and walkable errands, ask where the front door sits relative to the places you will actually use. Walk it before you sign. See more about the neighborhood, or read our guide to getting around Georgetown.
