Getting Around Georgetown Without a Metro Station
The first thing people learn about Georgetown is that it does not have a Metro station. The second thing they learn is that most residents do not seem to mind. The neighborhood is compact and flat in the right places, and a lot of daily life happens on foot.
On foot
Georgetown’s main streets, M Street and Wisconsin Avenue, hold much of the neighborhood’s shopping, restaurants and everyday errands. The waterfront and the C&O Canal towpath are close to our address at 1000 29th Street NW. Listing services rate the location highly for walkability, and that is how most of our residents run errands.
To the Metro
The nearest station is Foggy Bottom-GWU, under a mile from The Ledger. Many residents walk it. Others take a bus or a short rideshare, especially in bad weather. Before you sign, make the trip once at the hour you would commute so you know how long it really takes.
By bus
Metrobus and local circulator routes serve Georgetown and connect to the Metro and other parts of the city. Routes change, so check current maps on the WMATA and DC Circulator sites before you plan around one.
By bike
The canal towpath and the trails along the river and Rock Creek make cycling a real option, both for exercise and for getting across town. Bike share stations are common nearby. If you own a bike, ask where it will live. The Ledger offers bike storage as an add-on, listed on our Upgrades page.
By car
Parking in Georgetown is limited and street parking is hard to count on. If you drive, ask about a reserved space. The Ledger offers reserved parking as an add-on, so you can confirm it before you commit.
Rideshare and taxis
Rideshare is easy to find and often the simplest option for airport trips and late nights.
What to look for in an apartment location
- How far is the closest Metro station, on foot, at the speed you walk?
- Is there a grocery store, pharmacy and coffee within a short walk?
- Where will your bike and your guests’ cars go?
- How does the block feel at night?
Come see it
The best test is to walk it. Schedule a tour of The Ledger on 29th, then walk to the waterfront and to M Street. Learn more about the neighborhood or see current availability.
